Bifurcation analysis of a plant–herbivore model with toxin-determined functional response
نویسندگان
چکیده
A system of ordinary differential equations is considered which models the plant–herbivore interactions mediated by a toxin-determined functional response. The new functional response is a modification of the traditional Holling Type II functional response by explicitly including a reduction in the consumption of plants by the herbivore due to chemical defenses. A detailed bifurcation analysis of the system reveals a rich array of possible behaviors including cyclical dynamics through Hopf bifurcations and homoclinic bifurcation. The results are obtained not only analytically but also confirmed and extended numerically. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Dynamics of a plant-herbivore model with toxin-induced functional response.
Traditional functional responses for plant-herbivore interactions do not take into account explicitly the effect of plant toxin. However, considerable evidence suggests that toxins set upper limits on food intake for many species of herbivorous vertebrates. In this paper, a mathematical model for plant-herbivore interactions mediated by toxin-determined functional response is studied. The model...
متن کاملA model of plant-herbivore interaction with size structure in plants using toxin-determined functional response
One of the possible consequences of global warming in the northern hemisphere is the invasion of Arctic Tundra by woody plants, which is influenced by the chemical defense of plants against mammal browsing. In this paper, we explore the toxin-mediated plant-herbivore interaction with size structure in plants using a simplified mathematical model. The size structure of plants is important as it ...
متن کاملPlant-herbivore interactions mediated by plant toxicity.
We explore the impact of plant toxicity on the dynamics of a plant-herbivore interaction, such as that of a mammalian browser and its plant forage species, by studying a mathematical model that includes a toxin-determined functional response. In this functional response, the traditional Holling Type 2 response is modified to include the negative effect of toxin on herbivore growth, which can ov...
متن کاملModeling the Impact of Plant Toxicity on Plant–Herbivore Dynamics
Numerous empirical studies over the past two decades have documented substantial effects of plant toxins on diet choice and feeding behavior of herbivores, but analytical models have failed thus far to incorporate toxin-mediated effects of browsing on plant population dynamics. We study a mathematical model that incorporates plant toxicity in the functional response of plant–herbivore interacti...
